SAN DIEGO -- Sierra Monolithics Inc. (SMI) has unveiled a WiMAX-compliant dual band transceiver to enable low cost Customer Premises Equipment (CPE) for Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) applications. SMI is a leading supplier of high frequency mixed signal SiGe semiconductor ICs and modules for the defense and telecommunication industries.

The SMI7035 dual band transceiver incorporates full receive and transmit paths with on board synthesizers and voltage controlled oscillators (VCOs). SMI7035 tunes over 2.3 to 2.7 GHz and 3.35 to 3.8 GHz. The transmitter offers 55 dB of Gain control range and greater than 37 dB Signal to Noise and Distortion Ratio (SNDR). The receiver has an input range of -102 dBm to -20 dBm and is designed to operate in an interference-limited environment.

The on-chip synthesizer features 0.7 degrees root-mean-square (RMS) and settling times less than 100 microseconds. The single IC with wide tuning range allows Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) to address a wide variety of different frequencies that are being utilized worldwide with a single part. This lowers inventory costs for OEMs while simultaneously providing a dramatic cost reduction of the RF section of the radio.

"SMI has been designing high performance transmitters for high performance, high volume applications for almost a decade," said Matt Pope, Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Sierra Monolithics. "We believe this RFIC and reference design are a continuation of that legacy, providing a high performance, cost effective solution that will allow low cost CPEs."

The SMI7035 transceiver is offered in a low cost, surface mount 7x7 mm Quad Flat No-Lead (QFN) package. Samples will be available in summer of 2004 and pilot production is expected in fall of 2004. More information on this product and the reference design can be obtained by contacting Sierra Monolithics at [email protected] or 310-379-2005.
