MUNICH -- Siemens has announced the new Surpass Voice over Cable network solution, which allows cable network operators to create new revenue streams by offering IP-based voice communications in addition to video and Internet services over their existing cable networks. The operators also benefit from the fact that they can provide three different services over a single infrastructure. At the heart of this solution is the Surpass hiQ 8000 Softswitch, which supports the PacketCableÔ 1.0 specification. The Surpass PacketCableTM-based solution supports both U.S. and European standards for delivering IP-based voice services. Siemens relationships with best-in-class partners round out the full solution to support security, billing, network management, and other requirements of cable operators.Projected subscriber growth in the U.S. Voice over cable market (VoC) – according to the Morgan Stanley Equity Research Cable Industry Overview, September 12, 2002 – is expected to move from 2.3 million VoC subscribers in 2002 to 18 million in 2012. Similarly rapid growth is expected in the European voice over cable market during the same period.“Voice over cable raises the bar on expectations of reliability, availability, and features that are taken for granted like emergency dialing, lifeline survivability, and lawful interception,” said Christof Wahl, President, Carrier Networks, Siemens Information and Communication Networks. “To meet this cable industry need, Siemens brings more than 100 years of voice know-how, as well as a global service and support organization.”Siemens Information and Communications Networks Inc.
