Roshnee Raises Funds and Assembles Team

Roshnee Corporation, an optical networking equipment start-up focused on the rapid delivery of high-bandwidth services, today announced that it has received $11 million in venture capital financing.

Roshnee received its funding from a unique combination of leading Silicon Valley venture capitalists and successful telecom entrepreneurs. Investors include Redwood Ventures, New Enterprise Associates (NEA) and Raza Venture Management. The company's Board of Directors comprises Rajvir Singh, managing partner of Redwood Ventures and co-founder of Cerent and StratumOne, Rob Coneybeer, Partner at New Enterprise Associates, Atiq Raza, Principal, Raza Venture Management, co-founder of NexGen and former COO of AMD, and Vinay Kumar, President and CEO of Roshnee.

Roshnee develops next-generation transport solutions that enable carriers and service providers to address the service and bandwidth needs of their most demanding customers. The company's revolutionary optical networking technology combines telecom grade reliability and robustness with real-time responsiveness to support demanding data-communication applications such as Internet2. By combining the Company's revolutionary system architecture with advanced optical technologies, Roshnee's solution enables carriers to respond to customers' real-time bandwidth needs while maximizing the return on network resources.

Roshnee's management team is drawn from industry leaders Nortel, Cerent, FORE, PictureTel and ICAST. The management team comprises:

Vinay Kumar, President & CEO,was VP & GM at PictureTel Corporation where he was responsible for the company's carrier class IP/ATM network systems business. Prior to PictureTel, he was founder and CEO of ICAST (acquired by First Virtual Corp.) - a venture-backed startup that provides IP multicast routing products. Prior to ICAST, Vinay co-founded EIT (Enterprise Integration Technologies), which was acquired by Verifone/HP.

Sudhi Balakrishna, CTO & VP Technology, with over 14 years in ASIC and systems design, most recently was the co-founder of Cerent Corporation (acquired by Cisco Systems). Prior to that he co-founded Advancel Logic. Sudhi's experience encompasses telecommunications ASIC Design, SONET/SDH, ATM, and IP systems and network architectures as well as the design of microwave waveguides and systems.

Joe Skorupa, Vice President, Marketing, brings over 20 years of proven marketing and business development skills to the team. Before Roshnee, Joe was VP, Switching and Routing at RHK, a leading telecom analyst firm. Prior to RHK, he was Senior Director of Marketing at FORE, where he was responsible for all product management and marketing and played a key role on FORE's business development team. Joe also held marketing, product management and engineering positions with Codex, Wang Labs, Racal and Bytex.

Larry Tarof, Ph.D. Director, Photonics, has 15 years experience with Nortel Networks, in both technical and management roles. At Nortel, he worked on InP opto-electronic devices, SONET subsystems and ASIC development. Larry has authored more than 30 papers on opto-electronic device design, characterization and analysis, and serves as a subject matter expert reviewer for several IEEE journals.
