SAN JOSE, Calif. and ATLANTA -- Redback Networks Inc. (NASDAQ: RBAK) today launched its new SmartEdge Service Gateway platforms. The new Service Gateway platforms integrate the B-RAS strength of Redback’s industry-leading SMS™ family of subscriber management systems with the SmartEdge platform’s purpose-built hardware and software to provide simultaneous and scalable support of subscriber management with dynamic policy enforcement, carrier-class IP routing, ATM mediation, MPLS VPNs, multicast and high performance Quality of Service (QoS).

As part of the Service Gateway family, and to complement its SmartEdge 800 platform, Redback also introduced a new product called the SmartEdge 400 platform. The SmartEdge 400 platform expands the variety of physical locations where Redback’s SmartEdge technology can be deployed, while acting as a Service Gateway, resulting in capital and operational cost savings. The SmartEdge 400 platform’s form factor, power options and price points make it ideal for a broadly distributed architecture, suited for Remote Terminals and Central Offices (COs) while the SmartEdge 800 platform is ideal for larger Points-of-Presence (POP).

"Redback’s subscriber management is the most widely used technology today for helping carriers manage broadband subscriber and service growth,” said Kevin DeNuccio, president and CEO of Redback Networks. “As the data market begins to focus on value added services, it’s a natural evolution for us to extend our SMS technology to the SmartEdge platform. The SmartEdge Service Gateway platforms offer Redback’s customer-base ‘consumer’ scale for delivering the next generation of high-bandwidth, high-margin services such as broadcast television and video-on-demand, to name a few.”

Service Gateway network elements are the fundamental building blocks of the next generation of broadband networks because user management and intelligence are critical for the creation and delivery of feature-rich, profitable services. The SmartEdge Service Gateway platforms are currently deployed in 5 customers worldwide.

The SmartEdge Service Gateway product family with new operating software releases 2.4 and 2.5 is currently shipping and will be generally available in late Q2’03.

The SmartEdge 800 and the SmartEdge 400 Service Gateway platforms will be demonstrated in Redback’s booth (21535) at the SUPERCOMM trade show in Atlanta, GA from June 2nd - 5th, 2003.
