Filling a gap left by the demise of Minim, Premier LogiTech has locked in worldwide rights to the Motorola brand for DOCSIS devices, Wi-Fi routers, powerline network adapters and 5G-based fixed wireless access products.
DOCSIS modems and gateways, Wi-Fi products, and other devices will continue to carry the Motorola brand under the stewardship of Premier LogiTech.
Dallas-based Premier LogiTech said it has secured a new, multi-year agreement to use the Motorola brand globally for a wide range of products, including DOCSIS devices, Wi-Fi routers and extenders, powerline network adapters and 5G-based fixed wireless access (FWA) products.
The new agreement fills a gap in the marketplace. It comes together several months after the demise of Minim, a debt-ridden company that previously held a license to build and sell a portfolio of products under the Motorola brand.
'Extremely reasonable' terms
Premier LogiTech declined to say how much it's paying for the global rights to the Motorola brand. President and CEO Scott Paul said the new agreement will include minimal royalty payments over a period of five-plus years and stressed that the terms are "extremely reasonable in our mind."
Past SEC documents showed that Minim had been paying $7.1 million annually in guaranteed royalties to Motorola/Lenovo.
Launched in 2007, Premier LogiTech has been providing repair and product lifecycle services to Motorola for more than ten years, with an emphasis on mobile products.
Moving forward, Premier LogiTech will take over the development, distribution and ongoing support, care, and overall lifecycle management of the Motorola-branded product line. Paul said Motorola will also play a role in approving new products that stem from the new agreement.
"We're very in-sync with their [Motorola's] quality team," he said.
The new deal also includes support for the existing installed base of Motorola products, including DOCSIS 3.1 devices, that were formally distributed and managed by Minim.
Premier LogiTech will also take advantage of Minim's prior relationships with original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and look to expand such partnerships. Minim had been working primarily with T&W along with more limited engagements with Foxconn and Zinwell, according to an industry source familiar with Minim's history.
Looking ahead
Paul said Premier LogiTech will also work on new generations of product, confirming that the company has placed DOCSIS 4.0 on its roadmap.
At the outset, Premier LogiTech is setting up direct-to-consumer sales channels for its Motorola product lineup, including a new standalone sales website and distribution with retail partners such as Amazon.
Paul said Premier LogiTech will also endeavor to build on its existing carrier relationships and work directly with cable operators. In addition to focusing on the US, Premier LogiTech has plans to rapidly expand its Motorola business internationally, he added.
Premier LogiTech also intends to enhance and improve the software that manages devices such as DOCSIS gateways and modems.
Minim had offered management via a product branded as MotoSync. Premier LogiTech has yet to say if the MotoSync brand will continue or if it will use a new product name for the software management platform that is being developed in-house and currently undergoing testing.
