ANAHEIM, Calif. – OFC 2002 – In spite of the recession gripping the telecom industry, last week’s Optical Fiber Communication Conference and Exhibit (OFC) was even bigger than last year in terms of the number of exhibitors. A total of 1,348 are listed on the OFC’s Website – up from 970 in 2001 (see OFC Report).

Light Reading also broke some records at the show – by posting a total of 60 news analysis articles and more than 100 newswire items about new developments at the OFC on our unofficial, unauthorized Not The OFC Website. (The show organizer didn’t consider us worthy of “official” status as a media partner.)

Our team of editors at the OFC included Phil Harvey, Peter Heywood, Eugénie Larson, R. Scott Raynovich, Marguerite Reardon, Pauline Rigby, and Steve Saunders, backed up by two copy editors in New York – Kevin and Matt Cramer.

With so many exhibitors and so many articles about the world’s biggest optical networking exhibition, it can be tough to put things into perspective. It can also be tough to do the opposite – make sure you’ve scoped out everything that occurred at the OFC in a particular product category or area of development.

That’s where this show report comes in. We’ve sorted the 160-plus articles that we posted on Not The OFC, to help you see the forest and the trees.

Here’s a hyperlinked summary:

  • Pictures, Palaver, People – Capturing the mood of this year’s OFC.

  • Systems News – Big companies, big announcements... just not many of them.

  • Active Components – This includes lasers, modulators, and detectors.

  • Passive Components – Including wavelength multiplexers and attenuators.

  • Optical Transceivers – Or do we mean transponders?

  • Optical Amplifiers – From SOAs to EDFAs.

  • Optical Switching Fabric – MEMS has a revival!

  • Integrated Optics – Who did what in planar lightwave circuit technology?

  • Other Stuff – Anything optical that didn't get covered under the headings above, such as dynamic gain equalizers, dispersion compensators, and fiber.

  • Communications Chips – OC768 (40 Gbit/s) Sonet ICs feature heavily here.

  • Components Manufacturing Gear – A brief look at some of the automated manufacturing and test equipment for optical components.Next page: Pictures, Palaver, People— Pauline Rigby, Senior Editor, Light Reading

    • "This year's conference has been the stake in the heart of 3D MEMS switches" — Philip Chapman, president and CEO of OMM Inc.

"Last year there were 900 companies at the show. This year there are 1200. What the industry needs is fewer companies not more." — Paul May, CEO, Kamelian Ltd.

“Look at Ciena. Sprint basically made them.” – Paul Finke, President & CEO, Yafo Networks (See Yafo Scores $22 Million.)

"We don't just bring customers a big fat pipe, we bring them an intelligent fat pipe." — Ashok Krishnamoorthy, CEO, AraLight Inc. (See AraLight Cuts It Short.)

"I'd like it to be tomorrow. The industry is still embryonic. But things are starting to roll now." — David Banitt, CEO of Nano-Or Technologies (See Components: Measure Once, Cut Better.)
