ESPOO, Finland -- Nokia today announced that it has signed on as a global sponsor of the Live 8 concerts on July 2, 2005, organized by Sir Bob Geldof to call on the eight leaders of the world's richest countries to act for debt cancellation, increased aid and trade justice for the world's poorest people at the G8 summit six days later.

John Kennedy of Live 8 said, "Having Nokia as a global sponsor is fantastic as it underscores the importance of communication. Nokia brings additional awareness and visibility to this most important of causes - helping to eradicate poverty."

"We are proud to be a global sponsor of the Live 8 initiative," said Pekka Rantala, Senior Vice President, Multimedia Marketing, Nokia. "Nokia is about connecting people and the Live 8 initiative is a perfect example of what people can accomplish when we work together to achieve a common goal. It's also great to see that the passion people have for music can be channeled for a common good."

He continued, "The Live 8 concerts will bring billions of people together, either in person or through broadcasting, to share an unforgettable experience that helps to raise awareness for an important global issue. We want to enable people to share this once in a lifetime experience and feel connected and working together even though they may be physically apart."

As a global sponsor, Nokia provides funds to help cover the costs associated with running the events. In addition, the cooperation between Nokia and Live 8 will extend beyond the series of scheduled concerts.

LIVE 8 is part of a day of action across the world which kick-starts The Long Walk to Justice that calls on the eight leaders of the world's richest countries to cancel debt, increase aid and bring about trade justice when they meet for the G8 summit in Gleneagles, Scotland on 6th-9th July. On 2nd July in London, Edinburgh, Philadelphia, Berlin, Paris and Rome millions will be coming together to call for complete debt cancellation, more and better aid and trade justice for the world's poorest people. LIVE 8 is calling for people across the world to unite in one call - in 2005 it is your voice we are after, not your money.
