HONG KONG -- Motorola's (NYSE: MOT) Commercial, Government and Industrial Solutions Sector (CGISS) today announced the smooth implementation of its TETRA (TErrestrial Trunked RAdio) digital communications solution for Modern Terminals Limited. The new TETRA system plays a very important role in the efficiency of Modern Terminals' operations with its highly available and reliable communication technology. This smooth implementation also marks Asia's first TETRA project for the seaport industry.

With the TETRA-based radio communications system, Modern Terminals will benefit from reliable, state-of-the-art voice and data communications that help manage the increasing volume of container traffic plying through the terminals each day, as well as strengthened terminal security.

"Hong Kong has always been at the forefront of communications. As digital leaders in Asia, we are optimistic about the growth in digital communications in Hong Kong and are committed to delivering world-class communication solutions to address the needs of customers in this market," said F L Leow, Vice President-Motorola Asia Pacific and President-China operations for Motorola's Commercial, Government and Industrial Solutions Sector (CGISS).

"We chose this system because it delivers greater voice clarity, enables us to serve a larger user population with fewer channels, and has added security features such as digital voice coding. These advantages help to make the running of a terminal more efficient for us. We were impressed with Motorola's record of achievement in delivering these systems and that's why we decided to partner them on this project," said Erik Bgh Christensen, Managing Director, Modern Terminals Limited.

Motorola's new TETRA system serves Modern Terminals' operations initially in Container Terminal 9 (South), followed by Container Terminals 1, 2 and 5. The terminals' equipment maintenance engineers and security personnel are equipped with compact and rugged Motorola TETRA portable radios to help coordinate, supervise and monitor the day-to-day operations. In particular, the system facilitates work order dispatch, container tracking and logistics coordination. Mobile radios have also been installed on the cranes to facilitate communications between crane operators, terminal supervisors and equipment maintenance personnel.

The improved voice quality and efficient channel allocation offered by the TETRA digital trunked radio system enables all terminal personnel to communicate with ease, speed and accuracy. Features now available with the digital trunked technology include short data services and talkgroup communication. The system also allows Modern Terminals to expand the number of users on the system as container traffic increases.

"Motorola is honoured to supply our TETRA system for Modern Terminals - the first TETRA contract for Seaports in Asia. We look forward to growing our partnership with Modern Terminals as we provide a robust and reliable digital communications system that is important to their operational efficiency and safety," Leow added.
