REDWOOD CITY, Calif. -- BigBand Networks, Inc., a leading provider of network platforms for video, voice and data services, today announced that MetroCast Cablevision has deployed BigBand VOD Edge for video-on-demand services in cable systems serving New Hampshire and Maine. The networked installation across multiple facilities includes Gigabit Ethernet networking, QAM modulation and RF upconversion on BigBand Networks’ high-density BME50™ (Broadband Multimedia-Service Edge) platform.

“BigBand Networks’ VOD Edge solution suits our needs well, as it combines GigE and QAM capabilities in a scalable, reliable platform,” said Steve Murdough, vice president and general manager of technical operations, MetroCast Cablevision. “BigBand VOD Edge on the BME50 installs quickly and easily and maximizes our network and resource efficiency. As a result, our growth and customer satisfaction are enhanced at the lowest costs. These capabilities are validated by BigBand Networks’ strong standing in the market place achieved by serving operators and systems of all sizes.”

MetroCast Cablevision’s VOD deployment makes compelling content available for on-demand consumption by subscribers. A centralized architecture efficiently consolidates storage on the SeaChange International MediaCluster video server system in a main headend location. Gigabit Ethernet is used to distribute sessions to hub locations as far away as more than 100 kilometers. The BigBand BME50 terminates the IP connections at these edge locations, de-jitters content to assure video quality, and performs QAM modulation and RF upconversion for accessibility by any digital set-top box. Service uptime is maximized through multiple redundant and hot-swappable components on the BME50.

“MetroCast Cablevision’s deployment of BigBand VOD Edge on the BME50 underscores the operator’s commitment to delivering the most advanced services to its subscribers,” said Richard Peske, BigBand Networks’ vice president of product marketing for video solutions. “This platform seamlessly expands as offerings are scaled up, network architectures advance, and additional services are provided to MetroCast Cablevision subscribers.”
