SAN DIEGO -- Maxima Corp., developer of high capacity optical wireless transmission systems, has named Sam Smookler as CEO and chairman.James Plante, president and founder, said the addition of Smookler to the Maxima team is a critical step in company growth as it accelerates the commercialization of its long wavelength All-weather Optical Wireless (AOW) technology for ultra high speed bandwidth in last mile access, enterprise, private networks and mobile infrastructure applications."Sam has over 30 years of proven leadership in technology businesses, most recently as CEO of DMC Stratex (Nasdaq:STXN), an industry leader in medium and high capacity point to point wireless transmission systems," said Plante. "He has international experience managing new product development, operations, sales channels and customer relations and has dealt with the financial and investment communities. He joins Maxima at the perfect time as we launch a new platform of high performance wireless optics that solves the problems previously associated with fog, dust, rain and clouds that have plagued the current generation free space optics (FSO) companies."Smookler was president and CEO of DMC Stratex from May 2000 until his retirement in December 2001 and was president and COO from January 1998 to May 2000. While at DMC Stratex, Smookler led the development and introduction of the industry's first wireless access product combining ultra-high capacity, high bandwidth efficiency and fiber-level performance in a single radio platform."I'm excited to join the Maxima team," said Smookler. "I believe that the underlying all-weather optical wireless technology being implemented here has the potential to be a mainstream high capacity optical wireless delivery system. Long wavelength infrared (LWIR) optical wireless begins at speeds of 155 megabits per second, pretty much where microwave and millimeter wave systems peak out. Add the facts that LWIR can scale up to 2.5 gigabits of bandwidth, does not require licensed spectrum and can be deployed virtually anywhere without restriction and you have the ingredients for a powerful high capacity transmission solution."Smookler joined Maxima on August 1. Plante, who had been acting CEO during the search for a new chairman and CEO, remains as president and founder.Maxima Corp.
