Lemur Networks launches its i-Fabric Firmware Manager for cable system operators to track and upgrade cable modems in real time
May 6, 2003
EATONTOWN, N.J. -- Lemur Networks, a leader in providing standards-based, delivery and management of dynamic IP services for broadband service providers, today announced the availability of its i-Fabric™ Firmware Manager (FM) for cable system operators.
Lemur’s i-Fabric FM allows MSOs to track installed cable modems and remotely effect real-time upgrades of their capabilities from DOCSIS 1.0 to DOCSIS 1.1. These upgrades will allow cable operators to take advantage of DOCSIS 1.1 features such as Quality of Service (QoS) and bandwidth shaping, to control how much bandwidth is available per-subscriber at any given time. Lemur has reached an agreement with a top-tier MSO for purchase of the product.
“Cable operators moving from 1.0 to DOCSIS 1.1 – or simply updating a configuration file to support a new DOCSIS or PacketCable ™ release – face the challenge of upgrading a large installed base of products,” said Andrew J. Audet, CEO of Lemur Networks. “Our i-Fabric FM automates what would be an onerous manual task and eliminates the possibility of human input errors.”
Using Lemur’s i-Fabric FM, operators can field-upgrade DOCSIS 1.0 modems based on such user-specified criteria as the modem vendor, the model, the cable modem termination system (CMTS) being used and the modem’s IP range. Operators can schedule upgrades, create, edit and delete and reschedule upgrades, if necessary, using the installed Lemur firmware, which also features a configurable timeout and re-try period.
i-Fabric FM is capable of handling up to one million modems, and can upgrade more than 3,000 per hour. After the upgrades are completed, the software can be used to troubleshoot and manage existing system elements.
