KTF to Distribute BREW Apps
South Korea's KTF signs publisher agreement to distribute wireless applications developed for Qualcomm's BREW platform to operators worldwide
July 9, 2003
SAN DIEGO -- QUALCOMM Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM), pioneer and world leader of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) digital wireless technology and KTF, a leading South Korean wireless operator, today announced that KTF has signed an agreement to become a BREW Global Publisher (BGP) for applications developed for QUALCOMM's Binary Runtime Environment for Wireless(TM) (BREW) platform. The agreement authorizes KTF, the first operator in the world to launch BREW- based services and now the first to become a BGP, to assist developers with the export and distribution of wireless applications to other operators around the world that are offering BREW-based services. These other operators include Verizon Wireless, ALLTEL and U.S. Cellular in the United States, KDDI in Japan, China Unicom, VIVO (the joint venture between Telefonica Moviles and Portugal Telecom) in Brazil and Telstra in Australia.
As a BREW Global Publisher, KTF will be able to make available the more than 500 different applications in its BREW-based magic n multipack(TM) catalog to wireless users across the globe that subscribe to a BREW-based service. This agreement is advantageous for both KTF and its developer community, because KTF will benefit from increased revenue as a global application publisher, and developers will benefit from increased global exposure and sales opportunities.
"KTF's role as a BREW Global Publisher is great news for Anicom as it will continue to expand the global reach for our BREW-based wireless applications," said Mr. Seung Jin Park, president of Anicom, a leading mobile entertainment content provider. "What's more, the BREW solution allows KTF and Anicom to effectively manage and bill for our applications no matter where they are distributed."
"By becoming a BREW Global Publisher, KTF continues to pioneer the wireless Internet. This agreement is a testament to their leadership, and to their commitment to support their top-notch BREW developer community by enabling them to make money overseas," said Peggy Johnson, president of QUALCOMM Internet Services. "This agreement signifies KTF's success with BREW and further validates that BREW is enabling a truly global virtual application marketplace."
Since becoming the world's first wireless operator to launch BREW-based services in November 2001, KTF has seen the number of subscribers to its magic n multipack service reach more than four million, representing an impressive 40 percent of the operator's total subscriber base. More than 50 BREW-enabled handsets have been made available to KTF subscribers since the service first launched. Recently, KTF subscribers began accessing and enjoying robust applications on its CDMA2000 1xEV-DO network, including streaming video and other multimedia content.
QUALCOMM will host the inaugural BREW Developers Conference in South Korea, "BREW 2003 - Seoul," on July 14, 2003. The conference provides a forum to learn more about how they can participate in the global marketplace created by QUALCOMM's BREW solution and BGP's like KTF, as well as an opportunity to meet industry influencers, experts and peers, to network and share business insights, and to advance their technical knowledge.
