UNTERFOEHRING, Germany -- Kabel Deutschland will extend fast Internet service via the television cable network to another million households over the next two years. Kabel Deutschland’s renewed upgrading campaign focuses on rural areas and ‘white spots’ lacking coverage in the old federal states. The cable network will then have been extended to almost 100% of the old federal states in western Germany. With this renewed upgrade, 90% of Kabel Deutschland’s cable network, representing a total of about 13.6 million households, will be Internet and telephone enabled. Two million of these cable-equipped house-holds are in rural regions.

"Kabel Deutschland is making yet another important contribution towards reach-ing the federal government’s broadband objectives with this Internet upgrade for an additional million households. For cities and communities today, fast Internet is a key locational factor crucial to their competitive position," notes Dr. Adrian v. Hammerstein, CEO of Kabel Deutschland Holding AG. “The new federal states in the east of Germany could also see further upgrades and a wider offering of fast Internet service via cable once the fragmentation of local cable networks has been overcome," adds v. Hammerstein.
