EBERMANNSTADT, Germany -- enviaM, a subsidiary of the RWE Group headquartered in Chemnitz, Germany, has now expanded the capacity of its fiber optic network in cooperation with its subsidiary envia TEL. According to the company, DWDM systems have now been brought into operation to expand the capacity of the backbone fiber ring which connects the German cities of Chemnitz, Halle, Leipzig, Cottbus and Dresden. Vierling Electronics GmbH & Co. KG provided and installed the equipment. For five years now, the company has sold systems produced by the Chinese manufacturer Huawei Technologies in the German-speaking countries. According to Hans Werner, Managing Director of Vierling, this installation of DWDM components is now the third largest of its kind to be built in Europe with such equipment from China (after the French networks run by neuf telecom and FreeTelecom).
The network consists of 14 sites and was configured at the start of operation with Gigabit Ethernet and STM16 interfaces for a total transmission capacity of up to 320 Gbit/s in the ring. envia TEL’s Managing Director Rüdiger Weckwerth believes the new backbone is a solid investment, particularly in view of envia TEL’s expanded SDH network with PoPs in 420 cities. Besides offering the potential to optimize the existing SDH network, the new network also delivers the capacity needed to transport broadband IP traffic for business clients and carriers. Along with his employees, Jens Wengenmayr, head of the network department at envia TEL, was won over by the quality of the equipment and the level of Vierling’s expertise he witnessed at Huawei’s office in Paris. Wengenmayr said that “as a result of the speedy installation and flexible response times provided by Vierling, we were able to bring the new system into operation right on schedule in 2004”.
