PRAGUE -- On August 30, 2002, Eurotel launches its multimedia messaging service (MMS), giving contract customers their first chance to send photos, pictures, sounds, or simple animation between mobile phones. "Multimedia messages are the natural evolution of SMS technology, and MMS takes us a major step closer to 3rd Generation technology," says Terrence Valeski, Eurotel's CEO and general manager. "We expect that starting from the end of this year, the majority of mobile phones will support MMS, and many of them will have the camera integrated into the phone. In the next three to five years, phones will regularly come with cameras and color displays, and MMS will be as common as SMS is today." In July, Eurotel began selling two MMS-ready mobile phones: the Nokia 7650 and the Sony Ericsson T68i. With these phones, MMS service can be activated with a call to the Eurotel line at *11. Customers can then capture their special moments with one click of the mobile camera. Once the photo is on the mobile's display, they simply use the menu to attach the desired voice or text message. Then they type in the destination as a phone number or email address. If an MMS is sent to a phone that does not support the MMS standard, the recipient will receive an SMS notification with a URL and password that allows them to view the complete message via the Internet or WAP. Activation is free, as is receiving an MMS. Sending an MMS to another Eurotel phone costs just CZK 9.50 (including DPH). Eurotel is expanding the service this September, when customers can register for unique MMS information and entertainment services that include such items as news and weather, illustrations, animated postcards, and images that include soundtracks.
