PARIS -- EDS and Alcatel (Paris: CGEP.PA and NYSE: ALA) have announced agreements under which EDS will provide information technology (IT) services to Alcatel and EDS will assume operations of Answare SA, Alcatel's IT services subsidiary. Terms were not disclosed.

Answare provides systems integration and technical assistance to leading French companies and various Alcatel subsidiaries. As part of the agreements, Answare will join EDS France, and EDS will become a preferred IT services provider to Alcatel.

"With these agreements, EDS is taking another major step to increase revenue growth and market share in Europe," said Antoine Rostand, president of EDS France. "We look forward to a successful, long-term relationship with Alcatel."

The move is in line with Alcatel's strategic repositioning on the telecom market. "By joining EDS, whose core business is IT services, Answare will enjoy a very favorable environment for its development and enhance EDS' portfolio of IT services in France," said Olivier Baujard, president of Alcatel's Network Application activities. "EDS will also help Answare access additional customer accounts."

The transaction has been submitted to employee representatives for approval and is expected to close early in 2002.
