BellSouth Uses Nortel Softswitches

Nortel provides packet voice tandem switches for BellSouth's core network

ATLANTA -- Nortel Networks(NYSE:NT)(TSX:NT) has been selected by BellSouth to provide packet voicetandem switches for its core network under an agreement announced today.BellSouth expects to roll-out its first voice tandem solution inMemphis, Tenn. Network testing is planned for the second quarter of 2004and deployment is expected during the second half of the year.

"BellSouth continues to see growing capacity needs in itscore network," said Bill Smith, chief technology officer, BellSouth. "Byusing packet voice tandem switching, BellSouth is helping to meet thesedemands, while benefiting from the better economics, higher capacity andadditional flexibility of the new architecture."

The agreement includes Nortel Networks SuccessionCommunication Server (CS) 2000 softswitch and Succession MultiserviceGateway 4000 products. Succession CS 2000 will operate as a tandemswitch in BellSouth's network, transferring calls between BellSouthswitching facilities, or Central Offices, that serve customers.Traditionally, BellSouth has relied on circuit switching for thiscapability.

"BellSouthwill be deploying a state-of-the-art, packet-based network using NortelNetworks Succession solution."
