Avanex appoints Jo Major as chairman

FREMONT, Calif. -- Avanex Corporation (Nasdaq: AVNX) today announced that Jo Major, who is serving as President and Chief Executive Officer of Avanex, has also been elected Chairman of the Board, succeeding Mr. Syrus P. Madavi. Mr. Madavi, who served as Executive Chairman, has decided to leave the Board for personal reasons. Mr. Madavi stated, "I believe Avanex has made much progress over the years. I trust that Jo and the Board will continue this great momentum."
Jo Major commented, "We appreciate the leadership of Syrus in building Avanex and wish him all the best in his future endeavors." Regarding the election of Major to Chairman, Todd Brooks, Avanex's Lead Independent Director, commented, "Jo has served Avanex extremely well as President and Chief Executive Officer and has built tremendous momentum during the restructuring. We look forward to Jo's expanded role as Chairman of the Board, and we are excited about the prospects for Avanex in the future."
The company also announced the appointment of Greg Dougherty to its Board of Directors, effective immediately.
Jo Major, Avanex's Chairman, President and CEO commented, "Greg is an exceptional addition to the Board and excellent choice to represent the Company's stakeholders. His wealth of experience and in-depth knowledge of the optics industry will be of tremendous benefit in guiding Avanex as it executes on its restructuring and diversification plans. We look forward to his contributions."
Mr. Dougherty is a director and the acting Chief Executive Officer of Picarro, a venture-backed startup focused on developing innovative lasers and optical instrument solutions. Prior to joining Picarro, Mr. Dougherty served as chief operating officer of JDS Uniphase and SDL Inc.
During his career at SDL, Mr. Dougherty held a variety of leadership positions. His experience in fiber optic communications also includes senior marketing positions with AT&T's Microelectronics Group (which later became part of Lucent Technologies and then Agere Systems) and marketing and engineering positions at Codenoll Technology and Laser Diode, Incorporated.
Mr. Dougherty graduated with a bachelor's degree in optics from the University of Rochester. He currently serves on the board of directors at T Networks, Picarro and the local chapter of the Ronald McDonald House.
