LONDON -- According to a new survey by KRC Research of London, 66 percent of text messaging users in the UK were under the false impression that their messages could reach the shores of the US - a misperception likely shared by subscribers throughout Europe.
Today, however, AT&T Wireless is bridging this cross-Atlantic divide.
AT&T Wireless announced that it has added the UK to the list of countries where customers of many foreign carriers can exchange text messages with AT&T Wireless subscribers for the first time. Last year, a staggering 20.5 billion text messages were sent in the UK alone, according to the Mobile Data Association (MDA). Since AT&T Wireless has reciprocal text messaging services in place with nearly 130 foreign operators in more than 50 countries, the majority of the world's wireless subscribers can now send and receive text messages to AT&T Wireless customers.
"AT&T Wireless is leading the charge to meet the growing need for text messaging services for billions of users around the world," said Glenice Maclellan, vice president of messaging services at AT&T Wireless. "For many people, especially overseas, text messaging is the preferred way of communicating with friends and family. AT&T Wireless' global reach is significant for them, as loved-ones and colleagues are now just a text message away."
