PARIS -- Alcatel (Paris: CGEP.PA and NYSE: ALA), world leader in intelligent optical networking, and Turk Telekom signed a US 30 million dollar contract, for the deployment of a high-speed DWDM (Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing) transmission network and network management solution in Turkey. The project will grant Turk Telekom a major expansion of its telecommunications infrastructure to keep up with the country's growing demand for fast multimedia services. After pioneering FEC for submarine networks in 1991, Alcatel is bringing this unique technology to DWDM terrestrial systems. The new high-speed national backbone - connecting major cities across Turkey - will provide Turk Telekom with the first DWDM systems ever deployed in the country for commercial applications. Alcatel's state-of-the-art DWDM systems, part of the Optinex family of carrier-class transmission solutions, will be able to carry up to 32 channels at 10 Gbps and will operate with a capacity equivalent to 38 millions telephone conversations simultaneously.

"The Turkish telecom market scenario shows concrete signs of expansion", stated Jean-Marie Vansteenkiste, President of Alcatel's terrestrial network activities. "We are pleased to help Turk Telekom build the network of the future and play a major role in the rapidly growing Turkish Internet market thanks to our turnkey, leading-edge optical networking solutions."
