PARIS -- Alcatel (Paris: CGEP.PA and NYSE: ALA) announced today that it has beenselected by the Paris public transport agency RATP to upgrade the private mobile radio network thatcovers its Metro, express line (RER) and bus system. This contract, covering both underground andaerial networks, is valued at over Euro 64 million, with a conditional part related to the aerialnetwork. The project is scheduled to be completed in 2007 and will ensure improved performanceof the transport network in terms of efficiency, continuity of services and security.

The project consists of the federation of several existing networks and their upgrade from ananalogue to a Nokia’s digital TETRA system. Alcatel will be responsible for the turnkey supply of thewhole network, including network design and optimization, systems integration, installation,commissioning, acceptance testing and project management in a multivendor environment; thecontract also covers network maintenance for a renewable 5-year period.

The TETRA network to be deployed by Alcatel comprises around 500 TETRA base stations and sixNokia TETRA switches, operator consoles developed by Alcatel using Nokia’s open interfaces, andAlcatel’s mass transit-specific applications. The network will enable mobile voice and dataconnectivity for over 10,000 personnel equipped with portable or on-board phones. They includebus, RER and metro conductors, as well as maintenance crews and security personnel.

Frédéric Rose, President of Alcatel’s integration and services activities, said: “This projectdemonstrates our strong capability in turnkey network services in multivendor environments. 80% ofthe value of the project is pure services; this is in line with Alcatel’s strategy to develop its servicesbusiness. It also illustrates our ability to serve the needs of our large transportation customers formission critical networks.”
