Alcatel and Motive join forces to meet triple-play digital home management challenge

PARIS and AUSTIN, Texas -- Alcatel (Paris: CGEP.PA and NYSE: ALA) and Motive, Inc. (NADSAQ: MOTV) today announced a joint marketing and development agreement that will give service providers worldwide the ability to solve a critical piece of the next-generation broadband services puzzle in a multi-vendor environment: the remote management of home networking devices that deliver Triple Play services (IP-based voice, video, data).

As part of this relationship, the companies will enhance their existing products by jointly developing, marketing and selling a single software solution for automating the deployment, configuration and support of advanced home networking devices called residential gateways, regardless of vendor, platform or operating system.

Triple Play services depend on a more sophisticated infrastructure that includes residential gateways for connecting the provider’s network to multiple devices in millions of subscriber homes. All of these devices are subject to constant change, creating a dynamic, highly distributed, new architecture that makes it challenging to deliver and manage a high volume of services. In order to profitably deliver, support and maintain these services, providers must extend their network visibility and control into the residential gateway and all of its connection points. Furthermore, they must ensure a simplified experience for consumers for who quality of service requirements are higher than ever before.

“Delivering IP-based Triple Play services to the home requires a totally new management paradigm that can address the varied support requirements for each service while keeping things simple for consumers,” said Michael Greeson, president, principal analyst for The Diffusion Group. “By joining forces, Alcatel and Motive are uniquely positioned to help service providers automate home gateway provisioning, reduce the complexities associated with gateway management, and stimulate end-user adoption of next-generation services.”
