Alcatel Does Microwaves in IN

DALLAS -- Alcatel (NYSE: ALA), the world leader in wireless transmission networks, and the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) announced that Alcatel will participate in a multi-million dollar build-out of the INDOT's toll road communication backbone network. Based on Alcatel microwave radio systems and transmission equipment, this project will enable the agency to enhance communications across the East-West Indiana Toll Road. Extending 156 miles across Northern Indiana, the toll road requires robust communications for efficient operation and passenger safety. Reliability, cost-efficiency and functionality of its product portfolio were factors in Alcatel's selection by INDOT for this communications upgrade.

Alcatel will deploy its MDR-8000 microwave digital radios, using licensed and license-free frequencies, along the entire span of the toll road. The Alcatel MDR-8000 is ideal for backhaul of land mobile radio signals, remote surveillance, and emergency restoration of communication networks. Alcatel's 1603 SMX multi-service Synchronous Optical Network (SONET) network element will integrate various signals into the microwave backbone network. Designed to provide maximum communications transport flexibility, the 1603 SMX offers a variety of interfaces and configurations to match specific user requirements.

In addition, microwave antennas and Alcatel Saft power equipment will also be supplied and installed by Alcatel. Scheduled to be operational in Autumnautumn 2003, the new network will enable reliable voice communication and broadband data transmission between multiple state agencies, as well as other emergency first-response personnel.
