50M BREW Apps Downloaded

Qualcomm says subscribers have downloaded more than 50M BREW-based applications since products and services became available less than two years ago

LAS VEGAS -- QUALCOMM Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM), pioneer and world leader of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) digital wireless technology, today announced wireless subscribers have securely downloaded more than 50 million BREW-based applications since BREW- enabled products and services became commercially available less than two years ago. The achievement arrives at a time of unprecedented worldwide operator, device manufacturer, publisher, and developer support for the Company's BREW system. BREW-based devices and applications will be on display at CTIA Wireless I.T. & Entertainment, Oct. 21-23, in booth 849 (Hall A) at the Sands Expo & Convention Center in the Venetian Hotel in Las Vegas.

"QUALCOMM's efforts to establish the BREW system as the best solution in wireless are paying off with its rapid worldwide adoption," said Peggy Johnson, president of QUALCOMM Internet Services. "This milestone signifies the success of the connections QUALCOMM has forged throughout the value chain -- with operators, device manufacturers, publishers and developers -- to deliver demand-driven, BREW-based applications."

"The accomplishment is also remarkable when you consider the figure represents the number of unique downloads of BREW-based applications. The figure does not take into account multiple uses of an application once it has been downloaded to a BREW-enabled handset; for example one ringtone application may download 5 or more ringtones," said Johnson.

Attendees at CTIA Wireless I.T. & Entertainment will have the opportunity to learn more about the various BREW-based applications that are or will soon be available for commercial download. QUALCOMM Internet Services executives will share industry expertise in several educational sessions during the conference, including:

  • Peggy Johnson will deliver the keynote presentation on Oct. 20 at 2 p.m. in Venetian Ballroom G at the Mobile Entertainment Summit.

  • Mike Yuen, director of BREW developer relations, will participate on the "Making Successful Mobile Games" panel on Oct. 20 at 5 p.m. in Venetian Ballroom G at the Mobile Entertainment Summit.

  • Gina Lombardi, senior vice president of marketing and product management, will present on the "Messaging Revolution" panel on Oct. 22 at 1:30 p.m. in Room 202 at CTIA Wireless I.T. & Entertainment.

As Sorrent expands globally, developing and publishing for the BREW system has helped open doors with leading mobile carriers. In fact, one of our BREW applications, Yao Ming Basketball in China, is the number one download on China Unicom's BREW-based service."

At the QUALCOMM booth, several BREW-enabled phones will be demonstrated and on display. Featured handsets include: LG 4400, LG VX 6000, Motorola T-720, Curitel 8600, Audiovox CDM 7500 and the Kyocera 3225 and 7135 SmartPhone.

The following enterprise applications will be featured and demonstrated at the QUALCOMM booth: MightyPhone(TM) by FusionOne; Remo(TM) by Xpherix; weather applications by Weathernews America Inc.; WSJ.com by SmartServ Online; ABCNEWS.com by Walt Disney Internet Group; MobileExpense(TM) by Rocket Mobile and Workforce by mPortal. Several QUALCOMM internal enterprise applications will also be featured, including Mobile Directory, Mobile CRM, Mobile Calendar and Mobile Mail.

QUALCOMM's BREW system provides products and services that connect the mobile marketplace value chain, which includes application developers, publishers, content providers, device manufacturers, operators and consumers.

Publishers and developers worldwide are generating revenue from BREW-based applications and content, and 18 manufacturers have offered more than 90 BREW- enabled device models to consumers. BREW is successfully enabling the commercial wireless data services of many very successful operators, including Verizon Wireless, ALLTEL, Midwest Wireless and U.S. Cellular in the United States, China Unicom, KDDI in Japan, KTF in South Korea, Telstra in Australia, VIVO in Brazil and BellSouth International in Colombia.
