LONDON -- The UMTS Forum today announced the appointment of Dr. Klaus Kohrt as its new vice chairman. Dr. Kohrt, who works for Siemens, replaces Josef Huber (Siemens) who had previously held the vice chairman role. The replacement comes as Huber comes to the end of his four year term.

Dr Kohrt has enjoyed a long career at Siemens, having joined the public communications networks division in 1984. In December 1996 he took over responsibility for strategic product planning of Siemens’ public networks group and in March 1999 joined the cellular networks division, “Communication on Air’ as vice president for UMTS strategy and promotion.

Since March 2001 Dr Kohrt has had responsibility for network architecture, radio interface topics and applications platforms within the strategic product management organisation.

Jean-Pierre Bienaimé, chairman of UMTS Forum comments: “We are pleased that Klaus Kohrt has decided to join the UMTS Forum executive team and we are sure that he will prove to be a valuable asset. His established career in the wireless industry, specifically in terms of his UMTS strategy experience, will be of great benefit as we continue to promote the global uptake of the UMTS 3G.

Dr Klaus Kohrt comments: “The UMTS Forum has worked hard to guarantee that UMTS 3G is a success and it has played a pivotal role in the advancement of services. We are now at a very exciting point where UMTS 3G is a reality and there are about three million subscribers worldwide. However there is still a long way to go and I am looking forward to being part of the continued success and future roll-out of services across the globe.”
