April 24, 2006
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. -- Ubicom, Inc., a leading provider of wireless communications processors and software platforms, has announced the appointment of Cathal Phelan as Chief Executive Officer.
With more than 20 years of experience in the semiconductor industry, Phelan will use his product and team management expertise to drive Ubicom's market share and global expansion. Prior to joining Ubicom, Phelan served as vice president of the Data Communications division at Cypress Semiconductor. In this role, Phelan headed up the company's most profitable division focused on the WAN, SAN and wireless infrastructure marketplaces, producing a portfolio of Dual Ports, FIFOs, PHYs and TCAMs. Previously, he headed up the Personal Communications division, which he grew over a period of five years to achieve more than 40 percent share of the standalone USB market and introduced the WirelessUSB family of products. Phelan holds bachelors' degrees in both electrical engineering and mathematics, as well as a master's degree in electrical engineering from Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland. He also serves on the board of directors for Virage Logic Corporation, a leader in semiconductor IP platforms.
Mr. Phelan succeeds former CEO, Doug Spreng, who is retiring after three years at the helm. Mr. Spreng has overseen numerous milestones at Ubicom, including the launch of the company's industry-leading StreamEngine products, the establishment of a strong customer base comprised of several top tier digital home infrastructure manufacturers, and the recent completion of a $20 million Series 3 financing round. His retirement comes at a time when Ubicom has successfully established itself as a leading player in the processor market and is well positioned to capitalize on the additional growth opportunities created by the advent of the 801.11n standard. Mr. Spreng will continue to serve as chairman of the board.
The appointment of Cathal Phelan signals the next stage in Ubicom's growth, with added emphasis on international expansion and further development of the company's products for the digital home market. To support this growth, Ubicom will be opening its new larger headquarters in Sunnyvale, California, on May 1, 2006.
"Cathal has an excellent track record in leading and growing businesses and is the ideal candidate to spearhead the next phase of Ubicom's growth," said Doug Spreng, former CEO of Ubicom. "He joins a strong management team with a proven track record in delivering innovative and robust products, so I'm confident he will successfully propel the company to new heights."
