June 28, 2006
PARIS -- Alcatel (Paris: CGEP.PA and NYSE: ALA) today announced that it has been awarded a new contract by Turk Telekom, Turkey's incumbent fixed operator, to supply 472,500 Digital Subscriber Lines (DSL) that will further boost the development of broadband services in Turkey. The deployment, which started in April, will be completed in the second half of 2006.
Alcatel's broadband access solution will be deployed both in Turk Telekom's existing locations as well as in underserved areas. It will allow the operator to increase the network capacity, expand its coverage reach and smoothly offer innovative advanced broadband services to its subscriber base. Alcatel has been a longstanding partner of Turk Telekom, having already deployed two million DSL ports in 82 cities in the country.
"This new award is an important milestone as it enables Turk Telekom to extend their network coverage and deliver user-centric broadband services country-wide, " added Dirk Van den Berghen, President of Alcatel's access network activities. "As key DSL supplier, Alcatel is committed to bring its global experience in the deployment and management of broadband solutions."
