DALLAS -- A complete DSP-based echo cancellation solution capable of actively canceling echo for up to 512 channels of voice is now available from Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI) (NYSE:TXN). Based upon TI's TMS320C55x(tm) DSP platform and Telinnovation echo cancellation software, the solution features significant enhancements to the echo canceller algorithm and a major increase in channel density over previous products. Earlier this year, TI announced the availability of its fully programmable, standalone echo canceller in channel densities of up to 128 channels on the TMS320C54x(tm) DSP platform. By utilizing the C55x DSP and attaining densities of up to 512 channels, TI is providing the lowest space and power per channel echo canceller solution available in the market.

TI's standalone Telinnovation echo canceller provides networking equipment manufacturers a complete echo canceller system from TI which incorporates the industry's most widely used echo cancellation technology. For this latest product, a series of voice quality enhancements tailored for wireless applications were made to the echo canceller, including:
Adaptive Noise Reduction (ANR), which utilizes a high precision noise abatement algorithm tailored to wireless applications;
Acoustic Echo Control, which removes acoustic echo emanating from the cell phone;
Automatic Level Control (ALC), programmable from -23 to -15 dBm0 (G.169);
Adaptive Listener Enhancement, which raises the target ALC level toward the cell phone in response to noise emanating from the cell phone; and
Tandem Free Operation (TFO) detection.

"Similar to TI's high-density voice products, our Telinnovation echo canceller solution requires no external memory, making it the lowest power and space per channel solution on the market today," said Brian Glinsman, executive director, infrastructure solutions for TI's voice over packet business unit. "Furthermore, because this is a software-based solution, it is fully upgradeable in the field for enhancements and new standards, addressing our customers' need for flexibility in this dynamic market."

For original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) developing packet-based networking products, the Telinnovation high-capacity echo canceller has long been heralded as the industry benchmark for DSP-based voice enhancement and echo cancellation. DSP-based echo canceller solutions are fully programmable and flexible, providing clear advantages over ASIC-based solutions. This effectively protects the solution from obsolescence created by changing network standards and market requirements.

"By utilizing a flexible and powerful DSP instead of a rigid ASIC design, we are able to address new requirements and challenges as well as take advantage of the continuing explosive development in DSP technology," said Charles Davis, chief technical officer, echo technology, for TI's voice over packet business unit. "This is our latest algorithm optimized for VoIP, mobile and class 4 applications."
