OCEANPORT, N.J. -- Tellium, Inc., provider of the world's first in-service intelligent optical switches, today announced that it has completed its acquisition of Astarte Fiber Networks, a privately held Colorado-based company that designs and manufactures photonic fiber-optic matrix switching systems used in high-speed optical networks. With Astarte, Tellium expands its intellectual property in all-optical switching to complement its current optical switching portfolio. In a related transaction, Tellium disclosed that Corning, Inc., a leading manufacturer of optical fiber, cable and photonic products for the telecommunications industry, recently licensed three Astarte patents relating to servo and control systems for MEMS (micro electro-mechanical systems) technology for its use in development of all-optical switch modules.

"When we started the development of the Aurora Full-Spectrum(TM) product line, we identified companies with leading technologies in the optical arena. Astarte is ideal because of the strength of its intellectual property portfolio. Corning is a leader in module and components manufacturing. We are excited to see the value of such intellectual property validated through license by a company of Corning's caliber," said Krishna Bala, Tellium's chief technology officer. "This acquisition is a major milestone in the development of our Aurora Full-Spectrum all optical switch."
