MORRISVILLE, N.C. -- Tekelec (NASDAQ: TKLC), a leading developer of telecom switching and signaling solutions for fixed, mobile, and next-generation networks, announced today the introduction of the wireless exchange media gateway series, the WX-8000 by Santera, a Tekelec subsidiary. It is the first built-for-purpose gateway that enables mobile carriers to seamlessly transition from second-generation (2G) to third-generation (3G) networks.

With its unique architecture supporting both native circuit- and packet-based fabrics, the WX-8000 series is the only media gateway capable of demonstrating a 3rd Generation Partnership Program’s (3GPP’s) Release 4 architecture. The 3GPP produces technical specifications and technical reports for 3G mobile systems based on evolved global system for mobile communications (GSM) core networks and the radio access technologies that they support.

Supporting open interfaces for call management, the WX-8000 series is well suited for universal mobile telecommunications systems (UMTS)-based networks and for interoperating with elements such as existing mobile switching center (MSC) servers or next-generation wireless softswitches.

According to Fred Lax, Tekelec president and CEO, the gateway is essential to the evolution of the wireless network. “Wireless network migration is a critical issue for today’s carriers who must support different protocols to provide services that their customers demand,” Lax explained. “The WX-8000 series provides wireless carriers with a smooth migration path and the ability to support multiple protocols on a proven platform.”

The gateway already has been deployed successfully in conjunction with the company’s first original equipment manufacture (OEM) partner for the product—Spatial Wireless. “Spatial Wireless has an established track record of delivering the benefits of distributed mobile switching to mobile carriers. We are promoting the industry-leading Tekelec wireless exchange media gateway as part of our Spatial Atrium® solution set,” said Pardeep Kohli, president and CEO, Spatial Wireless. “Spatial Atrium is being recognized globally as the best solution for mobile carriers switching needs today and tomorrow.”

In a separate release:

Tekelec (NASDAQ: TKLC), a leading developer of telecommunications signaling, switching, and application solutionss for now and next-generation networks, has developed a unique solution to aid wireless carriers in handling the rapidly emerging field of short code campaigns. The In addition to managing short message service (SMS) routing, Tekelec’s new Short Message Gateway (SMG) managehandles the unprecedented increasing number of short message service (SMS) calls traveling over wireless networks as marketers race to attract the next generation of consumers.

Tekelec’s SMG manages SMS traffic generated by short code – easy to remember four- to six-digit numbers linked to specific marketing campaigns . Tekelec is targeting carriers seeking to increase the success and profitability of audience participation programs such as American Idol, Joe Millionaire, and Trading Spaces with the solution.

“We believe the short code capability is one of those ‘killer apps’ for which carriers are searching,” said Fred Lax, Tekelec president and CEO.. “Carriers are recognizing the importance of readying the network to handle the high traffic loads that these promotions generate.,” said Fred Lax, Tekelec president and CEO. “The SMG will ease the short messages service center [SMS-C] congestion previously experienced in peak voting periods.”

Traditionally, SMS-Cs handled both mobile-to-mobile traffic and mobile-to-machine (short code) traffic. But their limited capacity required operators to deploy multiple message centers to accommodate short code activity, which comes in large bursts.. In contrast, the Tekelec SMG is capable of handling more than 8,000 messages per second—more than double the capacity of the most efficient message centers.

Lax added, “The SMG’s capacityduring short code promotions,” said Fred Lax, Tekelec president and CEO., “ and i and scalability will allow enable carriers to easily accommodate the traffic bursts without purchasing additional SMS-Cs.expand as SMS traffic growth dictates. We believe the short code capability is one of those ‘killer apps’ for which carriers are searching. AWS is leading the pack as the first crrier to recognize the importance of deploying a reliable solution to offload major bursts of traffic from the SMS-Cs.””

With the popularity of short code promotions on the rise, carriers are expected to see a continued increase in the number of audience participants. In 2003, American Idol 2 set record SMS traffic levels. Even higher SMS traffic levels are expected during 2004 and beyond as viewers cast their votes for favorite contestants.
