LONDON -- TDK Systems Europe has introduced the world’s first Ethernet PC Card that connects directly to fibre optic network cabling. The Fibre Card 2230 is a simple and convenient way to connect a laptop to a highly secure fibre optic network. The card inserts into the PCMCIA slot of a laptop and features either ST or SC fibre optic connectors, eliminating the need for external adaptors or ‘dongles’."Fibre optics is the only cabling technology that is guaranteed to be secure from eavesdropping," said Nick Hunn, managing director at TDK Systems. "Its use of modulated light to send and receive data also makes it immune to radio and electrical interference.""The Fibre Card has been developed as part of the worldwide research and development work that we do for government and military applications," said Hunn. "We have decided to launch the card on the open market because, in our experience, corporates have equal need for secure, interference-free LAN connections."TDK Systems’ Ethernet PC Card supports 10Mbps Local Area Network (LAN) connections and is compatible with Windows 95, 98, NT, ME, 2000 and XP. The card incorporates drivers that will operate with Intel, Toshiba, IBM, Databook, VLSI, Sirrus, Vadem, Texas and other compatible chipsets.TDK Systems Europe Ltd.
