SOUTHAMPTON, U.K. -- TANDBERG Television (TAT.OL), part of the Ericsson Group, today announced the worldwide launch of its ground-breaking EdgeQAM, the EQ8096, designed to speed deployment of advanced video and data services for cable operators. The next generation EQ8096 is a step-change in QAM devices and offers unprecedented density with up to 96 QAMs in a single 2RU chassis, simultaneous support of HD and SD streams, high reliability, low power consumption, and designed-in redundancy features. It has the unique ability to operate in Switched Digital Video (SDV), VOD, Broadcast, and High Speed Data (HSD) applications simultaneously within the same chassis. The EQ8096 will have its public launch in North America at The Cable Show 2007 (Las Vegas– May 7-9 - booth #452) and in Europe at the ANGA Cable trade fair (Cologne, Germany – May 22-24 - booth # D11).

This powerful new edge device has been designed to meet the needs of cable operators around the world who are focused on taking a leadership role by offering the next wave of multimedia applications. It is based on open-standards and is firmly future-proofed through its use of TANDBERG Television’s advanced RF modulation techniques. These unique technologies allow support for CableLabs DOCSIS 3.0 DRFI and M-CMTS specifications, enabling the EQ8096 to operate in DVB-C/HFC networks today and migrate seamlessly to tomorrow’s IP platforms.

"Cable operators are moving fast to enhance the television entertainment experience for subscribers through expanded service offerings such as high definition content via Switched Digital Video, video-on-demand and high-speed data. With more channels and next generation services, cable operators need to maximize their HFC bandwidth utilization while still offering existing VOD and broadcast services to their customers," says Braxton Jarratt, senior vice president of Marketing and Business Development, TANDBERG Television, Inc. "The new TANDBERG EQ8096 is designed to meet these needs with industry leading density and features. It enables cable operators to maximize bandwidth and implement a cost-effective and complete edge-of-network QAM solution for critical services today and tomorrow."

As an industry leader in the cable market, TANDBERG Television has a wealth of experience in developing advanced video delivery solutions for cable architectures. The EQ8096 is the second generation of TANDBERG Television’s QAM solutions and combines very high density (up to 96 QAMs in a single 2RU chassis) with modular design to enable ‘pay as you grow’ strategies. The unit uses less than 350 watts of power to deliver this advanced functionality and provides very high reliability through designed-in features like internal module switching/redundancy and internal stream replication. With stream replication, operators can send one stream to be replicated on all QAM channels, overcoming the problem of having to send multiple copies of the same stream for different QAMs and providing simpler solution architectures and less bandwidth utilization.
