WINNERSH, U.K. -- Symbol Technologies, Inc. (NYSE:SBL), The Enterprise Mobility CompanyT, today announced the opening of its new EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa) Shared Services Centre in Brno, South Moravia in the Czech Republic. The new 10,000-square-metre facility will serve as the hub for Symbol's EMEA customer support services including a repair centre, multi-lingual customer call center, finance, contract administration and sales ordering operations. It is expected to be fully operational by December 2004.

"The consolidation of the repair, technical phone support, finance, contract administration and sales ordering functions at one central European centre will enable Symbol to improve overall quality and consistency in meeting the needs of our customers," said Steve Priestley, vice president and general manager, Symbol EMEA. "We want to standardize our customers' experience so that every customer enjoys top quality, reliability and turnaround time when they do business with Symbol. We think the new Brno Shared Services Centre will help us realize that goal."

The concept of creating a Shared Services centre is to have a central location that serves as the focal point for support, offering broad-based and high-level assistance on an EMEA-wide basis. The new centre will help Symbol align resources and standardize business processes through the increased use of technology, and is staffed by local associates trained in specific disciplines. Customers will benefit through enhanced problem resolution capacity, faster turnaround times and the consistency of the services provided. The centre will be capable of handling hundreds of calls and repairs per day and will also offer integrated logistics support and parts warehousing.

The Brno location was selected because the region offers a highly skilled local workforce, a central location and proximity to Symbol's existing operations and customer base in Europe. Customers and partners across Western, Central and Eastern Europe will have access to Symbol's Shared Services Centre. The customer contact center will offer support in English, French, Italian, German and Spanish. Initially the centre will house approximately 200 associates, with the additional capacity to accommodate 550 associates.

The 24-hour services operation will offer customers advanced diagnostics, automated testing and repair verification, access to original equipment schematics and software source codes, preventive maintenance of products sent in for repair, software loading and pre-configuration of equipment, next-day equipment exchange option and on-site support options. It will support Symbol's mobile computing, wireless networking, bar code scanners and mobility software product lines. Operations that have been housed at Symbol's temporary International Repair Centre in Hodonin in the Czech Republic have been transitioned to the new Brno centre.

"We now have one central location that can offer enhanced services to our customers," said Art O'Donnell, Symbol senior vice president and general manager of the Global Services Division and Chief Quality Officer. "The opening of the global service centre in Brno is a major step in Symbol's plan to provide superior service and quality to our customers to help them operate more efficiently and effectively to meet their business objectives."
