HOLTSVILLE, N.Y. -- Symbol Technologies, Inc. (NYSE: SBL), a global leader in enterprise mobility solutions, today announced the acquisition of Covigo, Inc., an emerging provider of innovative software used in developing and deploying mobile computing applications.

"The acquisition of Covigo is a key component of our strategy to develop and deliver enterprise mission-critical mobility solutions targeted at optimizing our customers' business processes," said Todd Hewlin, Symbol senior vice president, Global Products Group. "We intend to develop mobility solutions that can then be easily taken to market by our software and system integration partners to enable customers to increase productivity and provide better management and control of their mobile computing assets."

The Covigo technology will provide critical building blocks for fulfilling the enterprise mobility requirements of Symbol customers, including applications supporting on-the-go field sales and service personnel, healthcare professionals and supply chain management teams from manufacturing to retailing.

The Covigo acquisition will be part of the Symbol Mobility Software Division, which is responsible for the development, marketing and delivery of integrated device and network management products, systems management products and client-side infrastructure mobility services, such as security policy management, real-time location processing, voice support and automated data capture integration.

The development of Covigo's mobile platform will enable customers to simplify the creation and deployment of wireless applications, while reducing administrative costs associated with network management and data synchronization. Symbol rugged mobile computer customers will be able to better capture time-critical opportunities and increase visibility to field operations including asset tracking, delivery tracing, employee productivity and adherence to service-level agreements.

"The addition of Covigo's mobile software development tools to the Symbol suite of solutions that address mission-critical business challenges is another step in strengthening our systems integration capabilities," John Bruno, Symbol senior vice president of business development and chief information officer, said. "This technology enables IT professionals to extend and enhance their existing business systems infrastructure for a more seamless mobility experience using Symbol rugged mobile computers to communicate in real time."
