Alcatel's Local Multipoint Distribution System provides mobile backhaul interconnection and broadband wireless access for Greek service provider
September 2, 2003
PARIS -- Alcatel (Paris: CGEP.PA and NYSE: ALA), world leader in wireless transmission, today announced the successful deployment of a network infrastructure based on its advanced Local Multipoint Distribution System (LMDS) for STET Hellas - a leading mobile service provider in Greece. The flexibility of Alcatel's LMDS solution provides STET Hellas with an ideal platform for supporting 2G, 2.5G and 3G mobile backhaul as well as broadband wireless access and the ability to cope with the evolving transmission needs over its multi-service network.
Alcatel has supplied its LMDS base and terminal stations and Alcatel 7270 Multiservice Concentrator (MSC) to further aggregate broadband traffic across the existing STET Hellas network which is already based on Alcatel's 7470 Multiservice Platform (MSP). The Alcatel 7470 MSP and Alcatel 7270 MSC provide STET Hellas with a future-proof solution that supports multiple services including TDM, Frame Relay, Ethernet, ATM and IP*. Additionally, Alcatel has upgraded its Alcatel 5620 Network Manager, which monitors the multiservice infrastructure in place, to include management of the new network.
The new network is already carrying services in major Greek cities, including Athens and Thessaloniki. By deploying Alcatel's high-performance point-to-multipoint LMDS solution, STET Hellas can deliver enhanced broadband wireless access services to end-users, as well as optimize broadband traffic transmission across its mobile infrastructure. In addition it will achieve significant savings in operational expenditures.
"In today's very competitive market, which is characterized by continued evolution in telecom technology and extreme dynamism of the mobile segment, STET Hellas believes that technology innovation is key to confirm its leading position,' said Michele Gamberini, chief network officer of STET Hellas. "The Alcatel LMDS backhaul and broadband wireless access solution will support STET Hellas in evolving its network towards higher grades of flexibility and cost-effectiveness.'
"LMDS represents an exciting opportunity for both fixed and mobile operators to deploy broadband wireless access and backhaul solutions enhancing the robustness and efficiency of their networks,' stated Marc Rouanne, chief operating officer of Alcatel's mobile communications group (local version: Dany Bitton, Alcatel Country Senior Officer for Greece) "We are very pleased to reinforce our cooperation with STET Hellas to further the development of its network and services.'
