LONDON -- Spirent Communications, a wholly owned business group of Spirent plc (NYSE:SPM)(LSE:SPT), announces that its AirAccess WCDMA Network Emulator platform is now compliant with the March 2003 revision of 3GPP's WCDMA specifications. Spirent has also completed a wide-ranging activity to validate AirAccess's ability to interoperate with user equipment from Tier 1 manufacturers.

The 3GPP WCDMA standards allow a wide range of network configurations, channel options, and signaling sequences to be considered. Therefore, comprehensive interoperability testing of user equipment can be a time consuming and resource intensive process. Functioning as a `network in a box' with an intuitive user interface, Spirent's AirAccess can be quickly configured to emulate virtually any multi-cell deployment scenario. This allows network operators and UE manufacturers to recreate many WCDMA network scenarios in the lab, including a wide range of handover scenarios, benchmarking interoperability capabilities ahead of costly field trials.

The services offered over UMTS networks must also perform to subscribers' expectations in a wide range of environments. AirAccess provides emulation of high-speed data services to enable performance analysis of next-generation user applications and services.

"Limiting interoperability issues and providing new services which perform to expectations will be two key contributors to 3G success," states Rob VanBrunt, vice president of product marketing at Spirent Communications. "The power and flexibility of AirAccess and our other solutions will help Spirent's customers achieve these goals and also help enable the success of 3G."
