Cypress Semiconductor subsidiary Silicon Light Machines names JDSU veteran Hal Zarem as president and CEO
June 30, 2003
SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Silicon Light Machines (SLM), a subsidiary of Cypress Semiconductor Corporation (NYSE:CY - News), today announced the promotion of Hal Zarem to president and chief executive officer (CEO). Reporting to Cypress President and CEO T.J. Rodgers and SLM's board of directors, Zarem's primary charter is to leverage SLM's microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) based Grating Light Valve(TM) (GLV) technology into new markets -- and to drive higher-market value for Cypress's stock by expanding its product sales. Zarem also joins the board of directors for SLM.
"With Zarem's extensive technical background and proven success, I am confident he will accelerate SLM's transition from an optical telcom supplier into a company with expanded product offerings," said T.J. Rodgers, president and CEO of Cypress. "During his tenure as the vice president of sales and marketing at SLM, Zarem continued to generate sales -- even through an optics downturn -- by leveraging the GLV technology into a variety of customer systems, including print applications."
"I am honored to accept this leadership position at Silicon Light Machines," said Hal Zarem, president and CEO of Silicon Light Machines. "SLM has a combination of assets that will drive the company to success, including innovative technology, a fantastic technical team, great backing from Cypress, and exciting new markets to address. I look forward to repositioning SLM as a leader of optical MEMS-based subsystems and being a part of our customers' next-generation platforms."
Zarem replaces Tom Werner, former president and CEO of SLM. Werner moves to SunPower Corporation, a silicon solar cell company which Cypress has vested interest, as their new CEO (see separate release dated June 24, 2003).
Zarem comes to SLM from JDS Uniphase (JDSU), where he held several leadership positions within the company's sales and marketing organizations -- most recently as vice president of market development. Prior to JDSU, Zarem was a general manager at Ortel Corporation (since acquired by Agere Corporation), where he created and led the Wireless Communications Division.
Zarem holds a Ph.D and MS from the California Institute of Technology. He also holds a BS degree in physics from the University of California, Berkeley. He has published over 30 articles and holds 2 patents.
