MARLBOROUGH, Mass. -- Telica, Inc., a leading provider of intelligent voice switching solutions, announces that Rogers AT&T Wireless (TSX: RCM.B; NYSE: RCN), Canada's leading national wireless communications service providers, has selected the Telica(r) Plexus(tm) 9000 Gateway Mobile Switching Center (MSC) application for deployment in a multi-million dollar contract. Rogers AT&T Wireless serves more than 3.8 million wireless customers over a network that supports GSM/GPRS, TDMA IS-136 and cellular, advanced wireless data, and one and two-way messaging services, covering 93% of the Canadian population.
Rogers AT&T Wireless will deploy Plexus 9000 Gateway MSCs into their metropolitan networks commencing this quarter. With this deployment, Rogers AT&T Wireless positions their network to achieve greater efficiency in traffic handling and further facilitates the operation of the dual TDMA IS-136 and GSM/GPRS networks.
"The deployment of the Gateway MSC architecture into our network is a significant step in ensuring that we continue to provide excellent wireless service regardless of technology," said Jim Smith, vice president of engineering for Rogers AT&T Wireless. "The reliability and density of the Plexus 9000 combined with Telica's proven experience with large carriers formed the basis of our decision."
"Rogers AT&T Wireless has always been at the forefront of leading-edge wireless services and technology deployment," said John St. Amand, President and CEO of Telica. "We are proud to play a role in supporting this important phase of their network evolution."
Telica's Plexus 9000 is a carrier-grade switch that includes all the elements of a softswitch-based solution, media gateway, media gateway controller and signaling gateway, to provide Class 4/5 switching for wireline and wireless networks. These various softswitch components are deployed in either a distributed or integrated configuration to meet a wide range of network requirements. In a fully protected configuration, a single Plexus 9000 shelf supports 80,640 for TDM applications and 21,504 ports for voice over packet applications. The unparalleled density and architectural deployment options provide the highest level of flexibility for service providers.
