Russian mobile operator Smarts selects Nortel for a wireless network expansion project in the Krasnodar and Black Sea coast regions

MOSCOW -- SMARTS, one of Russia's largest mobile operators, has selected Nortel Networks* [NYSE/TSX: NT] as its supplier for a wireless network expansion project in the Krasnodar and Black Sea coast regions.
Nortel Networks will overlay SMARTS' current GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications)/GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) network with new wireless equipment designed to boost network capacity to support up to one million subscribers. The new equipment will also create networking efficiencies that can enable significantly reduced operating costs and increase the number of mobile calls the network can accommodate.
