Nokia's hiring of Intel's Justin Hotard to be its new CEO has set tongues wagging again about a mobile exit, but it would look counterintuitive and inadvisable.
Nimbus Systems is to support upcoming Simpay mobile payments standard
February 24, 2005
MADRID -- Nimbus Systems, the leading software and services provider, is to support the upcoming Simpay mobile payments standard – and European operator’s entry into the space – with the introduction of its micro payments solution, Mistral.
Simpay, which has recently announced its commercial launch dates for later in 2005, was founded by Orange, Telefonica Móviles, T-Mobile and Vodafone. The platform facilitates payment for mobile commerce transactions through the development of an open and interoperable solution. Simpay announced at this year’s 3GSM that Amena and Proximus have become the latest operators to join the scheme.
Nimbus Systems launched into northern Europe in January of this year, when it also introduced its m-payments solution Mistral. The system is compatible with the Simpay standard and provides flexible merchant communication protocols.
Mistral enables operators to implement the Simpay standard in a fast and cost-effective manner. It also supports several different billing models; operators can use their own billing infrastructure or Stored Value Accounts provided by Mistral. The platform also supports e-Wallet functionality.
Jim Wadsworth, chief marketing officer at Simpay, said: "We welcome Nimbus Systems’ support as we progress our commercial launch plans. The work achieved by vendors in developing Simpay-compliant software will help to drive mobile payments forward, creating revenue potential for operators, content providers and merchants, and increased convenience for end consumers.
"Simpay now boasts members across 20 European countries, with the potential to reach more than 300 million mobile subscribers worldwide."
Tom Uhart, co-founder and managing partner of Nimbus Systems, said: "We’re excited about the launch of Simpay, and the opportunity of becoming involved in the scheme. Mobile payments finally seem ready to achieve their potential, as increasing numbers of operators are opting to join the scheme.
"We have worked hard to develop a Simpay-compatible solution for operators, and firmly believe that Mistral will help to fuel Nimbus Systems’ growth in the m-payments sector."
Simpay membership is open to all mobile operators, further operators are expected to join during 2005.
