FREMONT, Calif. -- NextWeb, California's largest fixed-wireless Internet service provider for business has acquired the assets of 1st Universe, a fixed-wireless service provider in Southern California, creating Orange County's most extensive wireless Internet service network. The deal is believed to be the largest cash acquisition in the fixed-wireless broadband industry and the largest of its type in the Orange County area, which, when combined with Los Angeles, is the largest business market in the nation(1). The deal will produce a solid network of cost-effective Internet service based on pre-WiMAX fixed-wireless broadband technology.

"1st Universe has been a strong competitor in the Southern California fixed-wireless broadband market and we are pleased to extend NextWeb's pre-WiMAX carrier-class Internet service to all 1st Universe customers. Sean Loftis, CEO of 1st Universe, has exhibited true entrepreneurial zeal in starting his company and successfully growing it organically with virtually no outside investment," said Graham Barnes, CEO and founder of NextWeb. "NextWeb already has an established network in the Southern California area as a result of our SkyPipeline and WorldWide Wireless acquisitions. With our acquisition of 1st Universe, we now have a significant footprint and valuable market share that will allow us to increase capacity, coverage and availability for NextWeb. We have developed a strong track record of organically growing our acquisitions and will continue to push ahead as a leader in the wireless broadband industry."

The acquisition will combine 1st Universe's coverage area in the greater Orange County, CA area with NextWeb's extensive pre-WiMAX network throughout California and Nevada. NextWeb currently provides service to more than 2,500 corporate accounts in the largest metropolitan markets in California and Nevada including the San Francisco Bay Area, the Greater Los Angeles area, Orange County and, most recently, Las Vegas. The addition of the 1st Universe network will give businesses in the Orange County area greater access to carrier-class fixed-wireless service from an award-winning company. The combined network will increase NextWeb's effectiveness and ability to serve its customers.

"NextWeb has developed a powerful reputation for delivering exceptional service and care to its customers, helping to provide the quality of service necessary to support the day-to-day Internet needs of businesses," said Sean Loftis, president and CEO, 1st Universe. "We are confident that NextWeb's skilled team will provide the highest level of service to our established customer base. We have chosen NextWeb to take the company to the next level as it continues to strive for the widespread deployment of broadband fixed-wireless service in Southern California and beyond."
