ATLANTA -- Movaz Networks announced today that it is introducing an All Optical Reconfigurable product line as further extension to its RAY™ product family. Following the successful unveiling of the RAY-ROADM product a year ago, Movaz is now expanding the Reconfigurable Optical Add Drop Multiplexing (ROADM) capabilities in two directions.

“Volume adoption of Reconfigurable technology will depend on two divergent factors; cost and functionality”, stated Bijan Khosravi, Chairman and CEO of Movaz, “We believe that two types of ROADM platforms would be required to meet these criteria. One is a simplified ROADM that can be added to an OADM network with nominal incremental costs. The other is a universal platform that can scale in functionality from single degree to multi-degree, and in services from tunable to multi-rate selectable muxponders. Unlike the super God boxes, Movaz’s RAY-uROADM and RAY-eROADM products are functionally sophisticated without incurring extraordinary costs for real life deployments.”

The RAY-uROADM is a universal platform that enables the plug and play of both scalable switching fabrics for reconfigurability, and intelligent service interfaces. The RAY-uROADM shelf can be configured as a Two Degree ROADM, a Multi-Degree ROADM or a Wavelength Selective Switched ROADM. The Two Degree ROADM is shipping to customers today and the Multi-Degree ROADM will be in customer trials beginning July 2005. The RAY-uROADM can be upgraded from two-degree to multi-degree without forklift changes as required by conventional 1x1 ROADM systems. Each of the multi-degree of reconfiguration can be added in the form of a card for each incremental channel connected, along with an in-shelf multi-function card that combines pre and post amplification, equalization as well as embedded power monitoring. Software intelligence is enhanced by an embedded GMPLS control plane that provides functional automation in all network management areas.

The next evolution phase of the RAY-uROADM is the addition of a Wavelength Selective Switch (WSS) module to support multi-degree NxN reconfiguration. As the number of reconfigurable degrees increases at a ROADM node, fiber management between the various input and output channels can become challenging to manage. An NxN WSS, with embedded MEMS array switching fabric, enables reduction of fiber interconnections as well as affords a far more cost effective implementation towards achieving higher degree of reconfigurability. The NxN WSS module will be another set of redundantly configured plug-ins for the universal RAY-uROADM shelf.
