Motorola teams up with United Information Highway to trial mobile WiMax

BANGKOK -- Motorola, Inc.(NYSE: MOT) today announced that the company has achieved the first successfulmobile WiMAX trial in Thailand, teaming up with United Information HighwayCompany Limited (UIH). The trial, demonstrating new wireless broadbandexperiences for users, marks the first among a series of Motorola's mobileWiMAX engagements in Thailand and yet another milestone in the company'sglobal WiMAX development.
UIH acquired a WiMAX trial licence last year from the NationalTelecommunications Commission (NTC), and conducted trials in Bangkok andPhuket to assess WiMAX traffic channeling capabilities in the respectiveareas. Through these trials, UIH experienced the full mobility performance ofMotorola's mobile WiMAX solutions.
"The successful trials with UIH affirms WiMAX as a feasible wirelesstechnology for the roll-out of cost-effective broadband services to urban andremote areas within a short deployment timeframe," said Eric Starnes, generalmanager and regional director of South East Asia, Motorola Home & NetworksMobility. "We believe that mobile WiMAX solutions will give UIHdifferentiating advantages in expanding wireless broadband offerings and othervalue-added services to their customers."
Bangkok and Phuket were selected as trial sites because of the areas' highdemand for broadband services. UIH is studying to use Motorola's mobile WiMAXtechnology to provide low-cost broadband services to corporate users andtravelers.
"The Internet penetration rate is currently around 15% in Thailand, and webelieve there is huge potential to market affordable broadband services toconsumers and corporate users," said Vichai Bencharongkul, president ofBenchachinda Holding Company Limited and chairman of executive committee ofUnited Information Highway Company Limited. With Motorola's WiMAX technology, the broadband service providers will beable to provide better personal wireless broadband services for applicationslike VPN, online entertainment, video streaming, Internet telephony and onlinegames.
