SINGAPORE -- Motorola's Canopy Platform has been chosen to provide WiMAX-like service on the island of Panay, located in the Aklan province of the Philippines.

"Our market research showed tremendous potential for high quality broadband connectivity given that many households in Aklan province have family members working abroad," said Rod Solidum, president of Convergence Network Solutions, Inc., the wireless Internet service provider that installed the network. "The affordability of Motorola's Canopy wireless broadband solution is making it easier for a majority of people to stay connected with their loved ones."

The Canopy solution was chosen over other vendor solutions because of its advanced technology, which includes a low carrier to interference ratio and because the system can be readily scaled to meet future network expansion throughout Aklan Province, said Solidum.

Motorola's Canopy wireless broadband is an always-on, high-speed broadband solution that is suited for enterprises, governments, ISPs and other network operators aiming to provide Internet protocol (IP) connectivity and providing services such as data, voice and video to market locations where existing broadband infrastructure is not available or affordable.

The Motorola Canopy deployment in Kalibo provides 360-degree coverage using 2.4 GigaHertz access points, each of which can extend connectivity up to 16 kilometers (km), covering the capital's population of 72,000. Convergence Network Solutions' success with using the Canopy system in Aklan resulted in Canopy installations on the Philippine islands of Visayas in Kalibo, Boracay Island and expansions in Luzon in Balagtas Bulacan and some parts of Metro Manila.
