CAMBRIDGE, U.K. -- UbiNetics, the world leader in WCDMA and HSDPA terminal and test and measurement technology, has licensed its WCDMA Protocol Software to one of Taiwan’s leading fabless semiconductor companies. The deal confirms UbiNetics as the leading 3G technology ‘provider of choice’ for chipset and handset manufacturers.

Under the terms of the agreement, UbiNetics will supply its WCDMA protocol software which MediaTek will incorporate into its forthcoming designs for 3G mobile phones. The WCDMA protocol stack, the software responsible for managing communications between the phone and the network, is one of the key components of any 3G solution, and the effectiveness of the protocol software has a profound effect on the overall performance of the handset.

MediaTek Inc., one of the world’s top ten fabless semiconductor companies and a leader in mobile phones in Asia’s hotly competitive market, selected UbiNetics because of the interoperability and maturity of the UbiNetics WCDMA solution.

Ji-Chang Hsu, general manager, wireless communications business unit at MediaTek, commented: “To maintain our leading position in the mobile phone market, it is critical that we choose the best solutions available for our designs. The WCDMA protocol stack from UbiNetics was selected since it is a proven and reliable solution, and the most advanced 3G protocol stack available on the market today.”

“We are very pleased to announce the licensing of our WCDMA protocol stack to MediaTek,” said Rafik Jallad, UbiNetics business manager. “The selection as a supplier for MediaTek is a good indication of the technical and commercial attractiveness of our Protocol Software in a fiercely competitive market.”
