ATLANTA -- Masergy Communications, Inc. a global service provider offering dramatic improvement in business application performance while lowering network costs, announced today the launch of inCONTROL VPLS, the first commercial Virtual Private LAN Service. This new offering extends the customers’ Local Area Network across their Wide Area Network – providing fully-meshed Layer 2 Multipoint connectivity.

MASERGY’s inCONTROL VPLS product provides a true Layer 2, switched virtual private networking service based on the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) standards. Using VPLS technology, MASERGY can divide its network into separate, independent logical switching instances so a customer’s VPN is completely isolated from all other traffic within the MASERGY network.

In The Yankee Group’s VPLS April 2003 report, the analyst firm says that VPLS will emerge by the end of 2003 as one of the network-based VPN services that spur equipment purchases by Tier 1 carriers.

“This industry first from MASERGY is a great service option for companies,” said Pat Matthews, senior analyst for The Yankee Group. “VPLS utilizes Ethernet as its handoff, easily enabling the extension of the existing enterprise LAN. This translates into lowered operational expenses by minimizing enterprise router configuration and management.”

According to MASERGY, with inCONTROL VPLS, customers can extend Ethernet throughout the entire network no matter what type of transport connection they are using or where they are located.

“As companies look to transition to next-generation services, VPLS offers an alternative to frame relay with no decrease in benefits such as security and reliability,” said Kenneth Frank, senior vice president, operations and engineering for MASERGY.

Major features of the inCONTROL VPLS service include:

  • Security – An Ethernet service offered across a global network with allthe privacy expected in a Layer 2 service.

  • Customer Control – The customers maintain full control over routing. Anyrouting protocol (OSPF, EIGRP, RIP, and BGP) can be used, and there is no need to update the provider when making changes. The MASERGY network is totally transparent to the customer.

  • Ease of Management – VPLS scales so that adding a new site does notrequire any changes to existing sites. The existing sites will automatically recognize the new site via a new entry in their MAC tables. The process is exactly the same as adding a new PC to an Ethernet switch. Also, since all connectivity is done via Ethernet, any Layer 3 protocol used in the Local Area Network can also be transported across the Wide Area Network.

  • Seamless Adoption – Since most IT personnel are very familiar withEthernet there is no need for specialized training or expensive expertise. Also, since this service is presented to the customer as Ethernet, the customer typically has equipment on hand. A standard IP router is the only customer premise equipment (CPE) required. No expensive serial cards need to be purchased for the CPE and no knowledge of serial technology (PPP, Frame Relay, HLDC, etc) is required.

  • Low Cost – Ethernet is well recognized as the most cost effective networktechnology.

Now available, inCONTROL VPLS is backed by the strongest and most straightforward Service Level Agreement (SLA) in the telecommunications industry. Key performance metrics include 100 percent in sequence packet delivery for video and voice. These industry-leading performance metrics are possible because of the customer-edge-to-customer-edge Class of Service (COS)/Quality of Service (QoS) capabilities inherent in MASERGY’s native Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) IP backbone.

MASERGY will be participating in a live demonstration of multi-service enterprise connections over an MPLS network in conjunction with the MPLS/Frame Relay Alliance, June 3 - 5 at Booth #10315, Hall C at the SUPERCOMM show.
