AT&T struggles to defend open cloudiness of Ericsson deal
More than a year into the Ericsson-led rollout, there is very little evidence AT&T's radio access network is as multivendor and virtualized as the telco makes out.
Marvell's Libertas family of 802.11g solutions extends WLAN market reach across enterprise, consumer and emerging markets
May 20, 2003
SUNNYVALE, Calif. -- Marvell(R) (NASDAQ: MRVL), a technology leader in the development of extreme broadband communications and storage solutions, today announced the Libertas(TM) 802.11g family of Wireless LAN (WLAN) solutions which are the ideal fit for the widest variety of wireless networking systems. Marvell's complete family of 802.11g WLAN solutions includes the Libertas (88W8000G/8310) client, (88W8000G/8510) access point (AP) and (88W8000G/8510H) gateway chipsets which address the widest scope of enterprise and consumer WLAN applications within the PC/Laptop, set-top box, ultra-mobile device, and gateway/router markets.
"In addition to meeting market requirements, Marvell has also done an excellent job of designing their chipset to meet high performance standards while at the same time reducing OEM costs," commented Allen Nogee, Principal Analyst with In-Stat/MDR. "Marvell has taken the necessary steps to ensure that their 802.11g solutions will be backward compatible to the millions of 802.11b nodes. This compatibility as well as architectural expertise will allow the IEEE 802.11g standard to realize its full market potential."
The Marvell Libertas 802.11g chipsets contain the advanced performance and functionality required to embed WLAN into the greatest breadth of applications, leading the movement of next-generation wireless connectivity. In both enterprise and consumer markets, the ability to safely distribute and prioritize demanding video, audio and voice data streams is a challenge to WLAN deployment. The Marvell Libertas 802.11g solutions solve this by incorporating Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) support in an on-chip security acceleration engine and programmable Quality of Service (QoS). With respect to supporting ultra-mobile devices, such as PDAs and cell phones, WLAN solutions need to become more power efficient. Marvell's unique, patent pending power management solution enables ultra-low current power-save mode operation. This capability allows the Libertas devices to use as little as one-fifth the power consumption of competitive chipset solutions, translating into increased battery lifespan. In order to satisfy the embedded systems market, the Marvell Libertas chipsets support a wide array of system bus interfaces such as PCI and Cardbus for the PC market, mini PCI for laptops and set-top boxes, Compact Flash for consumer products as well as MII for enterprise routers and gateways.
"With the most integrated, most advanced architecture, Marvell is able to work with OEMs and ODMs to create the most advanced 54 Mbps WLAN systems available for a variety of enterprise, consumer and emerging applications," stated Dr. James C. Chen, Marvell's Wireless Product Marketing Manager. "Marvell's hardware and software reference designs will not only provide the highest performance but will also deliver the most integrated solution for cost-sensitive wireless markets. This will provide our customers competitive advantages and features to make an immediate impact in the evolving WLAN market."
The Marvell Libertas complete family of 802.11g WLAN solutions includes the (88W8000G/8310) client, (88W8000G/8510) access point and (88W8000G/8510H) gateway chipsets. The 88W8310/88W8510/88W8510H include CCK (Complementary Code Keying), OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multplexing), as well as a proprietary 72 Mbps baseband processor. The 88W8510/8510H devices also embed the Company's UniMAC(TM) routing acceleration engine for improved bridging and routing performance. Marvell integrates advanced programmability functions with an advanced on-chip ARM9 microprocessor allowing developers to easily keep pace with IEEE updates as well as allowing for individual product differentiation and advanced features.
