Lucent Technologies is first vendor in North America to complete CDMA2000 voice and high-speed data calls using 2.1GHZ spectrum
October 29, 2002
BEIJING -- Lucent Technologies (NYSE: LU) today announced that it is the first vendor in North America to complete CDMA2000 voice and high-speed data wireless calls for 2.1 GHz spectrum. These successful calls, completed at Lucent's Wireless Research labs, are a significant milestone in the development of CDMA2000 infrastructure for 2.1 GHz spectrum, which is being evaluated as an option for mobile operators to offer commercial service in China. Using a CDMA2000 2.1 GHz test terminal and Lucent's CDMA2000 infrastructure, Lucent demonstrated high-quality voice calls. In addition, high-speed mobile data services such as Web browsing and e-mail access were exhibited at data speeds of up to 153 kilobits per second when the test terminal was connected to a laptop. "We are committed to providing mobile operators with a range of CDMA2000 and UMTS solutions, which will enable them to introduce new mobile high-speed data services to businesses and consumers in China," said Jason Chi, chairman of Lucent China. "These successful calls further demonstrate our spread-spectrum CDMA expertise and leadership." In August 2002, the CDMA Development Group (CDG) and eight wireless vendors, Lucent among them, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to deliver CDMA2000 infrastructure, terminal equipment and related technology to be used for 2.1 GHz spectrum. The initial equipment is being developed to support the third- generation (3G) trial efforts of China's Ministry of Information Industries (MII). Lucent Technologies Inc.
