SAN DIEGO -- LightPointe, a designer and manufacturer of optical wireless products based on free-space optics (FSO) technology, today announced the availability of its FlightLite 100E, the newest addition to its Flight family of point-to-point outdoor wireless bridges. The FlightLite 100E extends the distance of previous models to deliver unprecedented price-per-bit wireless Fast Ethernet, 100-Mbps full-duplex throughput, optimized for connectivity up to 1,500 meters.

The extended range of the FlightLite 100E is three times that of LightPointe's FlightLite 100, which since its introduction in 2004 has become the company's best-selling enterprise wireless bridge. When deployed at shorter distances, the new FlightLite 100E also delivers a more powerful signal that maximizes uptime and performance in rigorous weather conditions. Both LightPointe's FlightLite 100 and FlightLite 100E bridges are ideal for connecting buildings within a campus LAN for about the same price as half-duplex 802.11 bridges-while delivering more than four times the bandwidth.

Bob Preston, LightPointe's senior vice president and chief marketing officer, said the FlightLite 100E reinforces the company's focus on lowering barriers for enterprises seeking cost-effective, high-bandwidth networking solutions between two or more buildings and across multi-building campus environments. "FlightLite 100E leverages LightPointe's pioneering track record of delivering optical wireless products that meet expanding enterprise networking requirements," Preston said. "This newest member of the Flight family embodies the speed, reliability and cost effectiveness of our field-proven FlightLite 100 while offering an increased connection range between enterprise buildings."

In addition, FlightLite 100E incorporates IEEE802.af-compliant Power over Ethernet (PoE) technology, which eliminates the need for additional electrical wiring to power the system. The innovative PoE feature made its LightPointe debut with the FlightLite 100 and has gained substantial popularity with enterprise customers due to easier, faster and more economical installations. Weighing fewer than 5 kilograms (9.9 pounds), the FlightLite 100E also delivers its high-capacity bandwidth without spectrum interference and security concerns associated with many competing outdoor wireless technologies.
