PRAGUE, Czech Republic -- Kapsch CarrierCom AG has selected Nortel Networks (NYSE:NT)(TSX:NT) to supply a GSM for Railways (GSM-R) wireless communications trial network for Czech Railways.
The GSM-R network will provide communications for trains crossing the border between Germany and the Czech Republic. It will also position Czech Railways to make more efficient use of resources to increase train speeds, reduce delays, enhance passenger safety and operate more trains simultaneously.
Under an agreement announced today, Nortel Networks will provide GSM-R equipment for International Corridor IV to provide network coverage from the German/Czech border to Kolin, including Prague. GSM-R network coverage for this railway corridor is another important step in creating a uniform cross-border digital train radio system in Europe.
The Czech GSM-R system will expand Nortel Networks role in providing sophisticated communications networks to support rail travel throughout and beyond Europe. Nortel Networks currently provides GSM-R systems in Spain, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, Italy, Slovakia, and China.
